How to create a Crate Box
from cardboard scraps.
Toy organization is a cornerstone topic for every parent.
Probably the easiest way is to set one single toy trunk for everything, but in my opinion, setting up a system of bins or boxes is much more effective.
Wooden crate toy storage is a pretty popular idea and works really well as a decorative box, so I decided to make a similar crate box out of cardboard.
You may already have scraps of cardboard box lying around from some recent delivery so you can easily use them to make a medium-sized rustic box for free. And let’s not forget, if you build your own kids toy storage box, you can make it any size you wish!

Crate box size
As mentioned earlier the final size of your crate toy storage box is up to you.
I did 13×9×6.5” for several reasons
– enough storage space; it can fit a lot of toys
– kids can easily lift this crate box even when it is full
– fits nicely under the play table
First, make your giraffe bookshelf plan or download mine. Basically, for this cardboard bookcase, you can use any cardboard box you have. If your boxes are too small for your DIY furniture plans, simply glue a couple of smaller pieces together and see DIY tips for more details.

Crate box out of cardboard
Step-by-step tutorial
Step 1.
Base size is 13×9″. Make a paper bleed all around it.
Cut off bleed same as your cardboard thickness.
Step 2.
Short sides size 9×6.5″. Cut bleed off on the left and right sides. Glue sides to the base. Short side bleed meets with the base bleed and forms a corner.
How to glue using paper bleed
1. much easier to apply hot glue;
2. keeps your work at a straight angle and at a place so no taping is needed;
3. the edge of your huge cardboard number will be neat and clean.
Step 3.
Long crate box sides size is 13×6.5″. No bleed. Glue Long sides to the box.
Step 4.
Make inside corners for the crate (1″ width, folded in a half)
Step 5.
Prepare and glue outside corners (2″ folded in a half)
Step 6.
Add middle rib to the long side (1.5″ width)
Step 7.
Cut and glue side panels a little wider than a crate box (1.5″ width).
Step 8.
Cut and glue long side panels (make bleed on sides) and glue them.
